Kleintje Kips' voor Kids

A spreadable Saxon liver sausage with less fat, developed specially for children

Kips', part of the Zwanenberg Food Group, saw in 2009 that there was a growing need among parents of younger children for healthier, spreadable products for on bread designed specially for children. The company has developed a variant of their Saxon spreadable liver sausage with reduced saturated fat content and less energy and salt than the normal spreadable liver sausage. Kleintje Kips’ voor Kids is a recommended product in the meat products category.

The fatty meat ingredients of the product have been replaced by reduced fat meat and a fat replacement based on maltodextrin. Despite making this choice to replace the fat the creamy taste in the mouth has been retained. This change means that Kleintje Kips’ voor Kids has 9.4 g less saturated fats per 100 gram than the normal Saxon spreadable liver sausage. Kleintje Kips’ voor Kids may bear the My Choice (Ik Kies Bewust) logo because the amount of added salt (sodium) and saturated fats has been reduced.

Children experience taste differently to adults. In order to gear the taste to the target group honey and vanilla sugar have been used. These give the sausage a sweeter taste that to some extent masks the bitter taste of the liver.

Ingredients: water, pig's liver 27%, pork 20%, maltodextrin, sunflower oil, honey, onion, potato starch, salt, emulsifier: E471, spices, vanilla sugar, antioxidant: E300, yeast extract, preservative: E250.

There are six 20 gram mini sausages in each bag. 1 sausage is enough for one slice of bread. There is also a handy Kips’ opener in each bag so that the children can easily open the packaging themselves.

Zwanenberg has been busy for some time with the successful development of meat products containing less fat, a better fatty acid composition and less sodium, both for children and adults. A continuous test system at the production sites is used to ensure that quality remains constant.

Kleintje Kips’ voor Kids has been nominated for the Nutrition Centre Annual prize for 2009.
