O’mega breadO’mega bread

‘Healthy can be delicious.’ Zeelandia O’mega bread is enriched with omega-3 fatty acids and is made from special types of grain. The omega-3 fatty acids reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease.

Zeelandia is the first company to enrich its bread with the omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA. This supplement is based on fish oil granulate with 18% EPA and DHA. O’mega bread is multigrain bread baked in traditional style and sold fresh by the bakery every day. Since February 2005 it has been available in a light brown and a malt variety. The target group consists of health-conscious people for whom a healthy diet is a high priority.

Omega 3 is the name of a family of polyunsaturated fatty acids, including EPA and DHA that are obtained from fish oil and the vegetable-based fatty acid ALA. Omega-3 fatty acids are essential fatty acids, which means that our bodies need these substances in the same way as vitamins and minerals. These substances are not produced naturally by the body in sufficient quantities, so they have to be obtained nutritionally. The consumption of sufficient omega-3 fatty acids is important for a good cardiovascular condition. The Omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA occur mainly in oily fish such as salmon, mackerel, herring and eel. Research indicates that the Western diet contains very little fish. In that case it is possible to consume sufficient quantities of omega-3 fatty acids through enriched products such as O’mega bread.

The Dutch Health Council advises a daily intake of 450 mg EPA/DHA. 19% of this recommended daily intake of EPA/DHA can be obtained from four slices of O'mega bread (130 grams).

Zeelandia demonstrates that healthy food can taste good too. Besides the omega-3 fatty acids, several types of grain have been added to O´mega bread, primarily oats but also special spelt flour. Spelt is a high-fibre grain that has been used since time immemorial. It has a piquant aroma that gives the bread added flavour. O´mega bread also contains sourdough powder and lightly toasted aromatic malt. The bread is decorated with semolina, which makes the bread more attractive and gives it a delicious crispy crust.
